More about Adelina Jessy Maidman

Today, at the Museum, I had an opportunity to copy more documents held there. These are bad copies of faded handwritten transcriptions of, I presume, translations from the Dutch.Of particular interest was the documentation pertaining to the marriage of William Townsend and Adelina Jessy Maidman. As follows:

=============================================================
Registrar's Office, The Isle of Sumatra, Dutch East Indies, Residence Padang

No1. Extract

On the 18th of January of the year 1864 in Padang at the Registrar's office a marriage was solemnised between William Townsend born in Padang, 53 years old living in Padang and Adeline Jessy Maidman born in Padang, 27 years old living in Padang.

I declare that the above extract signed by me, public servant at the Registrar's office in Padang is a conformatry (sic) of the Registrar's office in Padang. 19 Nov 1877.

Sighted for legalisation the above signature of Cyril Hendrick Boelhammer civil servant of the Registrar's office in Padang. The president of the court of Justice in Padang.

Extract from the Registrar office at Padang 1864
Today the 18th January 1864 appeared before me, Willem van Ommen, civil servant of the Registrar office at Padang, William Townsend born in Padang, 53 years old, dwelling in Padang eldest son of Edward James Townsend and Corneila Johanna Dederingh both deceased, formerly married to Clementina Cecilia Sophia Chew, deceased, and Adelina Jessy Maidman born in Padang, twenty seven years old without profession, living in Padang, eldest daughter of Richard Robert Maidman, profession retired civil servant, and Latia (sic), without profession, both living in Padang, not married before. These persons asked me to solemnise their marriage. Included are some documents which are attached to this document.
1st - a certificate of the birth of the bride
2nd - a document death certificate of the groom's former wife Clementina Cecilia Sophia Chew
3rd - an authenticated certificate to notify the consent of the mother of the bride
4th - Evidence of the announcement of the wedding without resistance has occurred.
- Afterwards the groom has declared another oath that he was not able to produce a birth certificate.
- Has appeared before me Richard Robert Maidman 60 years old retired civil servant living in Padang who acted as substitute of father of the bride, who gave permission for the wedding.

William Townsend and Adelina Jessy Maidman declare that they take each other as partners and that they fulfil all the lasts and plights (sic) according to the law and are now in name of law man and wife.
Done in presence of Joseph Adam Koopman 54 years old retired civil servant and Adolf Hugo van Diemont, 39 years of age, merchant, brother in law of the bride both living in Padang.

This certificate is then ...

Signature W Townsend, AJ Maidman, RR Maidman.

============================================================
This answers some questions and raises others. Why did Richard Robert and Letitia Agatha stand in for Adelina Jessy's parents, John Butter Maidman and Johanna Maria? Did the 'happy couple" really have Adelina's parents' blessing? The story here is that Adelina was the daughter of a village girl, an 'Inlandse vrouw', but this is not well supported by the documentation. Even Letitia Agatha (?), wife of Richard Robert Maidman, does not sound like the name of a village girl of the era. She, herself, might have been the daughter of a 'mixed' relationship.

More about the Queensland Townsends

As more and more of the Queensland newspapers of the early 20th century come on-line for viewing, we can discover more of the 'doings' of Townsend descendants in this state.

It would seem that George Robert, in his position as Superintendent of Labour, was much exercised by the unemployment problems of Queensland, and the provision of labour to attempt to clear the infestations of prickly pear (cactus) which were covering much agricultural land. Mrs G R Townsend and young Noel Townsend appeared to be busy finding and donating material to the Brisbane Hospital and the Children's Hospital.

Mr V Townsend (Louis Victor) was breeding prize-winning poultry.

The reports on the death and  inquest into the death of Edwin Louis Townsend reveal that he was married to Annie Wilhelmina Zingelmann in 1912.

I'm sure there's much more to come.

I think that is just about enough from me

Little did I know what I was facing when I started to look into the life and times of Captain William Townsend. What a rich and varied family history!

I have spent today confusing and un-confusing myself over some details: who would expect that a man would marry, when young, someone with a certain surname and then, when older, a widow with that same married surname. I think it might have confused some other researchers, too.

Now that my three followers have met up, at least on-line, I think I can safely leave them to put everything together into one big family story. After all, they are all in the same small (compared to Australia) country.

It has been fun.

Townsend People in Japanese Internment Camps

At least two Townsend descendants died in Japanese internment camps, one in Java and one in Sumatra. I am sure that there are others who were interned but survived.

Marij Maria Eleonora Anna Townsend b. 16-4-1874 in Batavia, d. 14-12-1944 in Cidengkamp, Batavia (Also seen as Tjideng Camp – an internment camp ). Buried in Kalibanteng, Semarang.

I have looked through the register of names in this camp for April 1944 and the only person with initials MME is Sunnotel, M.M.E. However, there is a Sunnotel-Bennes M.M.E. in the August 1945 register so maybe a different person. However, not in another copy of the register.

Looking through the 1944 register, there are names that are somewhat familiar:
Andre Wiltens, L.S. While she was interned, her son Alfred John Andree-Wiltens was in the Dutch resistance and was later awarded the Medal of Freedom for his work. He was also godfather to Princess Margriet (sister of Queen Beatrix).
Andree Wiltens, M.M.
In 1945
Andree Wilton-Pennings, M.M (Cideng)
Goedhart, G. (no camp name given)
And undoubtedly there are others I might have missed.

Suse TOWNSEND (1-9-1913, Padang – 1-8-1945, Bangkinang internment camp), reported to have been married to Terry Meurs (van Meurs?).

There does not appear to be a page like the Tjideng page for Bangkinang, unfortunately. There may be registers of internees at some Dutch institution.

Drawings and other ephemera from the camps can be found at the Nederlands Instituut voor Oorlogsdocumentatie Museon, under the page Drawings from the camps in the occupied Dutch East Indies (1942-1945)
These are well worth browsing - some are excellently executed, some are naive but very evocative of the conditions in the camps.

Getting close to the end

Dear Blog Followers

Well, with the recent information added in, I have got to the point where I think I can give a very good talk to our Historical Society on the life, times, and descendants of the good Captain William Townsend. I do wish that I had more access to information residing in the Netherlands, but you can't have everything.

Yesterday, I sat down and compiled descendants lists for Edward James Townsend and William Townsend. I have a stock of the old 8.5" x 11" continuous paper, and after discovering that my printer can handle a page size of 8.5" x 22", set that. Edward James, with all the children of William (but no further descendants) will fit on 8.5 x 22, but the known (to me) descendants of William used up some 55" of paper.

There are still gaps.

We do not have the later generations of the ANDRE-WILTENS family. (Descended from Euphemia Clementina TOWNSEND.)
We don't know if William Roger TOWNSEND has any descendants.
Thomas is looking after the VOGLER and ELINK-SCHUURMAN descendants of Louisa Cecilia TOWNSEND and Maria Augusta TOWNSEND.
There could easily be more SADEE and COMPANJEN descendants of Maria Augusta TOWNSEND.
Ron and Jeffrey are looking after the descendants of Austin Edward TOWNSEND and Diedja. There could be a few more descendants of Austin Edward TOWNSEND and Suzanna Sara van der VLIST out there in Ermelo and, possibly, New Zealand.
Henry John TOWNSEND is still a bit of a blank slate, but if he is the Henri John TOWNSEND that Thomas discovered legal references to, then maybe he stayed single.
There are a few gaps in the later generations of RAFF descendants of Isabella Rachel TOWNSEND, and I will keep looking for them.
Similarly, DAVIDSON descendants of Mary Catherine TOWNSEND.
The van ERPECUM and BOLL descendants of Letitia Wilhelmine TOWNSEND are worthy of a little more research.

And that is about it. I am in contact with some TOWNSEND descendants here in Queensland, and know where to find others.

So. now that I have started this and, in the process, found a number of enthusiastic TOWNSEND researchers here and in the Netherlands, it might be time to move onto another project. (In truth, I have been researching SMILEY and WYBORN families over the past week or so in response to a letter to our Society. That was interesting, too.)

So, this will stay open. Over time I will go back to earlier posts and add in information that wasn't available at the time. However, anyone stumbling across this is welcome to contact me or leave comments, and I'm sure Thomas, Ron and Jeffrey will keep adding comments.

Cheers
Geoff

And, of course, there was the high point of finding the famous portrait of Madame Elink-Schuurman that so many in Australia had thought was lost.

Oh dear, now I've found Jeffrey's page with some info to help with the odd gap in my list of descendants of Edward James TOWNSEND!

More about descendants of Austin Edward and Diedja Townsend

A very big "Welcome" to Jeffrey, our newest follower. From information supplied by Jeff, it would appear that Austin Edward and Diedja produced a second daughter, Marianne Angela Edmunde Townsend born on 14th March, 1894. She appears on the 1895 Naamlijst, Batavia, supplied by Jeffrey; Isabella Mary is also on that list.

We know that Austin Edward died in March 1895, so now the hunt is on for a date of death for Diedja. Thomas has information that Isabella Mary was an 'orphan' under the guardianship of  a William Theodore (or Theodoor) Townsend at the time of her marriage in 1911.

(Later) Jeffrey has supplied photographs of Marianne ("Mary") and her husband, Jules Charles Circkens.
